Every year many greyhounds and lurchers are abandoned or destroyed. Greyhounds are bred in large numbers for racing and after a short or unsuccessful career are surplus to the requirements of trainers and owners. Unfortunately greyhounds due to their quiet demeanour are not the quickest to be chosen from general pet rescue centres and require specialist organisations.

The name Gracehounds was chosen as the old collective term for a group of hounds was greyce (grace) and greyhounds are such elegant and graceful dogs. It is our principal activity to find permanent homes and a better life for our dogs. All dogs will be in foster care before re-homing so that we can help them adapt to their new life in a home if all they have ever known is a kennel. During their time in foster care all dogs would be given a health check. They will be neutered, vaccinated, wormed, flea treatment, micro chipped and have dental care if necessary. The other benefit from foster care is that we will personally get to know the dog which will allow us to carefully assess each dog. Although we are based in Mid Lothian we will re-home in surrounding areas.
